On pp.154/5 of the MG
"Best Time of Working: Wednesday, midnight, near New Moon"
I assume this means the midnight after Wednesday evening and not the midnight which begins Wednesday on the previous night?

Yes. Consider the planetary day running from Sunrise-Sunrise. I usually do anyway, as I always consider nighttime the night of the previous day.. and hate when people call 1am or thereabouts "early morning."

In my own time, I studied astrology materials and this ruling pattern makes the most sense by far. You may wish to make use of this software, ChronosXP, to calculate the exact timing for your rituals.

Yes, this makes most sense to me, too -- otherwise it would seem to be going backwards, for some reason! (Unless it were a dire emergency of some sort, and then, I think I would do it twice, but under normal circumstances, I would go O.V. and Sputnik.)
