Hymn to Ares

Homer - Epic Hymns
O mighty Ares, which casts the war chariot, gilded by the helmet,
scutifero intrepid defender of the city, covered with bronze,
by the strong hand, tireless, skilled with the spear, the bastion of Olympus,
Father of Victory brings good fortune in war, support of justice,
ruler of the enemy, driving for the righteous mortal
lord of courage, which rotates the ball flaming
between the planets of the seven streets, where the fiery horses
along the third orbit will carry forever;
listen, protector of the mortals, the giver of bold youth
and pours from my life on your own soft light
your strength and martial, that I may
to rid myself of cowardice hateful
and bend in my mind the passion of the soul deceiver
and curb the overwhelming force of the fury that drives
cruel to throw myself into the fray, but instead you have the courage,
O blessed, grant, and to respect the inviolable laws of peace
escaping the turmoil of the enemies and inexorable death.

sorry for the translations , from google..

Lovely! I am sure if Ares had a car it would be a golf GTI ;)

Here is one I actually use quite often for Aphrodite...enjoy

from the Translation by Thomas Taylor at Theoi(dot)com

“To Aphrodite. Heavenly, illustrious, laughter-loving queen, sea-born, night-loving, of awful mien; crafty, from whom Necessity first came, producing, nightly, all-connecting dame. ‘Tis thine the world with harmony to join, for all things spring from thee, O power divine. The triple Fates are ruled by thy decree, and all productions yield alike to thee: whatever the heavens, encircling all, contain, earth fruit-producing, and the stormy main, thy sway confesses, and obeys thy nod, awful attendant of Dionysos. Goddess of marriage, charming to the sight, mother of the Loves, whom banquetings delight; source of Persuasion, secret, favouring queen, illustrious born, apparent and unseen; spousal Lukaina, and to men inclined, prolific, most-desired, life-giving, kind. Great sceptre-bearer of the Gods, ‘tis thine mortals in necessary bands to join; and every tribe of savage monsters dire in magic chains to bind through mad desire. Come, Cyprus-Born, and to my prayer incline, whether exalted in the heavens you shine, or pleased in odorous Syria to preside, or over the Egyptian plains thy care to guide, fashioned of gold; and near its sacred flood, fertile and famed, to fix thy blest abode; or if rejoicing in the azure shores, near where the sea with foaming billows roars, the circling choirs of mortals thy delight, or beauteous Nymphai with eyes cerulean bright, pleased by the sandy banks renowned of old, to drive thy rapid two-yoked car of gold; or if in Kypros thy famed mother fair, where Nymphai unmarried praise thee every year, the loveliest Nymphai, who in the chorus join, Adonis pure to sing, and thee divine. Come, all-attractive, to my prayer inclined, for thee I call, with holy, reverent mind.”

Love'em both... Venus and Mars... this picture always called my attention, reflecting so well the reality that the lovely Venus can disarm the dreaded Mars

Image

Venus is indeed the dreaded one :wub

Oh Venus...

Interesting . . . I wrote a poem a long time ago in which Venus addresses Mars, the Warrior, and one of the lines was . . .
"Lay down your arms, said Venus to thee"

I should find that poem . . . .

The Picture is from Mefite Di Cantoni..
Mephitis

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mefitis

From Virgilio, Eneide..

"Est locus Italiae medio sub montibus altis,
nobilis et fama multis memoratus in oris,
Ampsancti valles...
Hic specus horrendum et saevi spiracula Ditis
Monstrantur, ruptoque ingens Acheronte vorago
Pestiferas aperit fauces."

"C'è nell'Italia centrale un luogo alle pendici di alti monti
di cui molto si parla per la nobile fama,le valli d'Ansanto...
Qui un orrendo speco e diversi spiragli di Dite
vengono mostrati, e una grande voragine dove inizia l'Acheronte
che spalanca le fauci pestifere."

" there is a place in central Italy of high mountains
from which much is spoken for noble fame, valleys Ansanto ...
Here a horrible cave and several glimpses of Dis
are shown, and a large hole where he began the Acheron
that opens a dark mouth "

Darren that is one of my favorite Goddess and so close to my origins...
not too fairway away from where I live in Italy there was once Her Temple(where it's saying Canneto)..now there is instead a Sanctuary for A Black Madonna,(it's not the same place above, there are different sites in Italy ) where I was going a lot with my parents when I was a kid..the place is very beautiful and enchanting, high in the Mountain...I will take you there some days..
anyway, here an interesting article..

I google translate for you...
